Movember, the month formerly known as November, is when brave and selfless men around the world grow a moustache, and women step up to support them, all to raise awareness and funds for men's health - specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
Movember is a community trying to make a difference in mental health & suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
In Singapore you can go to https://sg.movember.com/ and donate.
Your donation will help us to continue what we’ve started and fund world class programs that are saving and improving the lives of men. All funds raised through the Movember Singapore campaign will support local men and their families who are living with prostate and testicular cancer.
Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide. The Movember Foundation runs the Movember charity event, housed at Movember.com.
Throughout the month of November men are encouraged to grow their moustaches to raise awareness and spark conversation for men's health issues, particularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.
Movember started in 2003 as two mates from Australia. Travis Garone and Luke Slattery, jokingly decided to bring back in fashion the moustache by convincing their friends to grow one. Inspired by a friend's mother who was fundraising for breast cancer, they associated the moustache with the pink ribbon, but for men.
Movember was truly founded in 2004 to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer:
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men globally. Globally, more than 1.4 million men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Even when successful, treatment can take a toll on the physical and mental health of those affected. We're working towards a day where no man dies of prostate cancer.
In most cases (better than 95%) a diagnosis of testicular cancer means established treatments and a good outcome. Unfortunately, there are a small proportion of men and boys who do not face that good outcome, and more needs to be done to support these men through diagnosis and treatment and into a long and healthy life after cancer.
as well as mental health and suicide prevention:
The results of poor mental health can be deadly. Globally, a man dies every minute from suicide. Men, regardless of age group, often don't recognise when they’re experiencing a mental health issue, and may not be comfortable asking for help. The uncomfortable truth is that some stereotypical forms of masculinity are killing men.
Movember fundraisers could help save a father, a brother, a son, a friend, a partner, a man's life. In Singapore, Movember works in partnership with the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), a self-funded voluntary welfare organisation which is dedicated to minimising the impact of cancer in Singapore through the provision of cancer treatment subsidies, financial and welfare aid to needy cancer patients, home hospice care services for terminally-ill cancer patients, as well as rehabilitation support programmes for recovering cancer patients and cancer survivors.
